Creating Symbols

You can create intelligent symbols from scratch or convert existing blocks to intelligent symbols.

Creating Symbols From Scratch

To create from scratch, select any collection of entities using the FlowTools FCOMPILE command. Four connection points are included on the new symbol at the points of the compass. The symbol is automatically named AUTO_X, where X is sequentially assigned.

Using Lines to Determine Connection Point Locations

Orthogonal lines or polylines that enter or touch the boundary of the entities can be used to locate connection points. DO NOT select the lines with the desired symbol entities, as they will otherwise be included in the symbol definition instead of being used to define connection points.

Converting Existing Symbols

To convert an existing symbol, click on it with the “IQ” tool. Per above, lines entering or touching the boundary of the symbol will determine connection point locations.

Lines or polylines touching EVERY INSTANCE of the symbol on the drawing will be used to find new connection points.

Naming Symbols

Rename symbols using the FRENAME command or AutoCAD’s RENAME command. FRENAME lets you also enter a description, which automatically creates a DESCRIPTION attribute inside the block definition.
